Short Course on Cannabis Analysis
Tuesday, 28.01.2020
9:15h
Due to recent changes in legislation all over Europe, the medicinal cannabis market continues to grow, and CBD infused edibles, food supplements and cosmetic products are enjoying an unprecedented surge in popularity. Accurate cannabis analysis is required in order to ensure product quality and consumer safety. This short course will cover the basics of cannabis and the industry, as well as the state-of-the-art testing methods currently available.
The Speakers are: Flavio A. Franchina, Université de Liège, Gesa Schad, Allegra Leghissa and Xaver Mönninghoff, Shimadzu Europa GmbH and Hansjörg Majer, Restek. You can find a detailed agenda here.

Carotenoids and Apocarotenoids Determination by SFE/ SFC Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry
Prof. Paola Dugo, Food Chemistry, University of Messina, Italy
Wednesday, 29.01.2020
13:30h
Plenary Lecture Room
The extraction and detection of bioactive compounds from biological samples is a very hard task. Conventional extraction procedures are usually time-consuming and can require a very high amount of organic solvents. Moreover, bioactive compounds can be photolabile and/or thermolabile, in these cases must be immediately injected to avoid any kind of degradation. Therefore, the aim of this research was focused on the development of on-line methods based on the coupling of supercritical fluid extraction and supercritical fluid chromatography with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry detection (SFE-SFCAPCI/QqQ/MS) for the carotenoids and apocarotenoids analysis in biological samples, namely human intact blood and human colostrum. The online nature of the system, compared to offline approaches, improves run-to-run precision, enables the setting of batch-type applications, and reduces the risks of sample loss and contamination. Carotenoids and apo-carotenoids were extracted and detected from intact blood and colostrum samples, and were identified by using the available standards together with scan, selected ion monitoring (SIM), and multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) experiments in the same run.
